Hello, card makers! Today, I’m excited to show you how to create a beautiful handmade card using the Faux Tile Technique—a fun and easy card making method perfect for beginners. This simple stamping technique gives your projects a professional, tiled look and only requires a few basic papercrafting supplies, making it a great option for crafters with a small craft stash. See more beginner ideas on my Stampin’ Made Simple playlist on YouTube.

Stampin' Up! Beautiful Butterfies Faux Tile Technique by Lisa Ann Bernard of Queen B Creations

This handmade card features the Faux Tile Technique, starting with a Fresh Freesia cardstock base from Stampin’ Up! (5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″, scored at 4-1/4″). The focal layer is a 5-1/4″ x 3-3/4″ piece of Basic White cardstock, scored using the Simply Scored Scoring Tool every 3/4″ both horizontally and vertically to create a grid that mimics ceramic tiles. To achieve the faux tile effect, I stamped the large butterfly image from the Beautiful Butterflies stamp set in Fresh Freesia ink, carefully avoiding heavy pressure or overly inked stamps to keep the scored lines clean and visible. This creates a soft, elegant tiled pattern perfect for spring or birthday cards.

To create a polished card front using Stampin’ Up! supplies, I started by cutting a Basic White cardstock layer to 5-1/4″ x 3-3/4″. This size ensures that all the decorative “tile” squares align evenly. To achieve a finished top layer size of 5-1/4″ x 4″, I added two strips of Basic White cardstock—each cut to 5-1/4″ x 3/4″—to the top and bottom. These strips peek out 1/8″ from each top and bottom edge, creating a clean, partially framed look. I then wrapped a piece of Petunia Pop 3/8″ ribbon across the card front, securing it to the back with Mini Glue Dots. Finally, I used Stampin’ Dimensionals to attach the entire panel to the card base, giving the handmade card added dimension and a professional finish.

To complete my handmade card featuring the Faux Tile Technique, I stamped an encouraging sentiment in Petunia Pop ink onto a scrap piece of Basic White cardstock, then punched it out using the Heartfelt Hexagon Punch—basic shapes are a must-have tool for card makers! To give the sentiment label extra dimension and help it stand out, I used a sponge dauber with Petunia Pop ink to softly blend ink around the edges. I adhered the sentiment to the lower right corner of the card front, right over the coordinating ribbon for a polished finish. For a final touch of coordinating elegance, I stamped the small butterfly image in Fresh Freesia ink onto the envelope flap—because a beautiful card deserves a matching envelope!

While creating handmade cards with the faux tile technique, I decided to make several more using different Stampin’ Up! cardstock color combinations. One version features Petunia Pop and Fresh Freesia cardstock, while another uses Bubble Bath and Smoky Slate cardstock for a soft, elegant look. For the sentiment on the Bubble Bath card, I layered it using the 2″ circle punch and 1-3/4″ circle punch, adding dimension and detail. Want to learn how to make faux tile cards like these?
